CAYA; WeBeXIT is here at last!

Dear Lost Souls,

Tonight the Haberdashery will host an informal “WeBeXIT” celebration, marking the dawn of a new era of West Berkeley independence and cultural flourish!

While BREXIT has dominated global media attention, West Berkeley’s declaration of independence (known as “WeBeXIT”), has been largely ignored by mainstream news sources. Even more disconcerting, neither the local establishment media (i.e. Berkeleyside, SF Examiner, SF Chronicle), or even the Mayor’s Office, have made any official comment on WeBeXIT … brazenly suppressing the will of the people! A coincidence … or a cover up? You decide!

A WeBeXIT spokesperson commented, “today is the culmination of WeBe’s struggle for independence, heroically sustained since the City of Ocean View, and our identity, were ignominiously erased from the map in 1878 as part of the incorporation of Berkeley”. WeBe artist, resident, and activist Stan Huncilman welcomed the news, pointing out that “while WeBe is home to all of the prime waterfront real estate, the vibrant 4th Street shopping district, and most of the coolest characters in town, cries for critical infrastructure improvements, like railroad crossing upgrades, have fallen on the deaf ears of a centralized authoritarian city government; more focused on the downtown.” City officials could not be reached for comment.

Yes, my Recalcitrant Rabble-rousers, Cocktail Hour is on for this evening. Cocktails will be served at 7.30pm. Though they be shaken, or stirred, we will not relent in the pursuit of our alchemical objectives until the final garnish has been secured upon the transparent vessels of Liberty … and the people's thirsts are properly satisfied! To show your solidarity, please feel free to march by for a quickie on route to your primary demonstration … or sit in defiantly and indefinitely!

Yours,
Los Cabañeros

CAYA; Experimental Democracy; Year 237 - Independence Day Fish FrAYA

Dear Lost Souls,

In a spirit of independence and with pride in our nation's ongoing experiment in democracy, we welcome the chance to celebrate her on-going birth . . .  sharing her bounty, breaking bread, and hoisting some all-American cocktails in honor of our fragile but enduring union . . . flawed though she may be in her conflict-scarred beauty. Just as the hard fought battles that eventually delivered our nation's freedom raged on for another 7 years after our founding fathers so brazenly declared our embryonic independence (on July 2nd, 1776), we continue our dynamic struggle to strike an equitable balance between the sacred powers that we dare entrust with our elected officials (e.g. protection of the 4th Amendment), and the defense of those hard-won liberties against the wanton corruption that these same powers seem to inevitably breed when left unchecked . . . their defense the very spark that once ignited the birth of this great nation.

Yes my Yankee Doodle Dandies, Cocktail Hour is on for this Friday evening. As a special celebration of our nation's birthday, we will be frying up a fresh and bountiful ocean harvest; courtesy of some of the Haberdashery's own heroes of the high seas. Please bring your appetite and something to share.

Cocktails will be served at 7:30pm. Please feel free to stop by for a quickie en route to your primary Continental Congress . . . or to linger indefinitely.

Yours!

Los Cabañeros

CAYA; Pagans, Patriots, and the Promise of a God-fearing Nation (ATTENTION - 9:00pm start time)

Dear Lost Souls,

Happy Independence Day!
With the rockets’ red glare, a hotdog in hand, and our nation’s capital about to spontaneously burst into flame, it is time to celebrate the anniversary of our great nation’s fiery birth in the crucible of hard-won liberty. It was on this day, oh-so-many years ago that, with the help of a few humble fisherman, Jesus Christ and the founding disciples crossed the mighty Delaware River to sign the ten commandments and declare our independence from those Cheeky Englishman; prompting Paul Revere’s fateful ride, to brave the shadow of British tyranny, and deliver us from another six weeks of winter.

While subsequent generations faced the sometimes formidable task of liberating and protecting God’s chosen land from the pagan agendas of heathens, infidels, and ‘natives’ who were incapable of understanding the simple majesty of Manifest Destiny, we eventually persevered, triumphing over mountain, river, and forest . . . digging deep into the earth's bowels to free God’s bounty . . . paving over wetland and prairie to provide convenient vehicular access to the shopping malls and drive throughs that pump their life-giving commerce through the cholesterol clogged veins of red-blooded American consumerism.

But, stay vigil my fellow Americans! Despite the unfettered fossil-fueled glory that our nation has enjoyed, our enemies lie in wait.  Progressive anarchists, climate-obsessed bohemians, and those unfortunates whom the Lord did not grant the benediction of being born within our cosmically ordained borders, raise the evil specter of their socialist and egalitarian agendas. They threaten to slow the oil-soaked wheels of righteous capitalistic glory, undermine the sanctity of proprietary-based marriage, regulate the whims of the world-saving selfless investment banker, and deny our downtrodden corporate citizens their God-given right to a political voice proportional (only) to the size of their hard-earned wealth. There is no sleep for the weary.

Yes, my Postmodern Patriots, Cocktail Hour is on for this Friday evening. We will be opening the gates a bit later than usual, at 9:00pm, to facilitate our attendance at the Oakland Art Murmur. We invite you to join us for a stroll through the galleries at the Murmur before heading back to the Haberdashery’s Hallowed Hall to hoist a chalice in honor of 236 years of flawless adherence to Judeo-Christian values. As always, we invite you to stop by for a quickie en route to your primary revolution . . . or to linger indefinitely.

Yours,
Los Cabañero
